To say I chose my old farmhouse would be a lie. I feel in my soul that this house chose me, and I was meant to have it. I looked at this house with my realtor and told her I would need to think about it (no heating or cooling, no updated electrical or plumbing, the dark and dank rooms and the over all feeling that this could very well be a sequel to the movie “The Money Pit,” had me a little concerned with making an offer. I was a single, recently divorced woman with nothing but some screwdrivers and a hammer in my pink leopard toolbox.
I wouldn’t have to make a decision, because the next day, it was under contract. It wasn’t meant to be. I spent the next four months religiously looking at every farmhouse that came on the market in the Middle TN and Northern AL areas. To say that search was a nightmare would be an understatement. With each house I looked at, I couldn’t stop thinking about the little farmhouse on Bunker Hill Rd.
My phone rang one morning and my real estate agent told me the Bunker Hill Farmhouse was back on the market because the contract had fallen through!!! I told her to meet me there in 15 min, let’s have one last look and bring me a contract to sign! When I pulled into the driveway, as I entered the old original wooden door and stepped inside, I knew this was the house for me. We stood in the outdated kitchen with maroon cabinets and hinges and laminate countertops with gold glitter flecks and signed the contract. Within a few days, the old farmhouse on Bunker Hill Rd was all mine!!
It’s been three years since I closed on this house and I know this is the home God wanted me to find and to come home to everyday. My rescue animals love it here and this is their home as much as it is mine. The four walls of this house truly rebuilt me as a person post-divorce…as I was working harder than I ever have to rebuild it.
I have hired a couple of contractors and handymen here and there to complete jobs for me, but I found out very quickly they never showed up. If they did show up they spent more time on breaks than they did actually working, or they saw a single female and took advantage of me by jacking up the prices or doing work that was unacceptable.
Then I was introduced to Chris Gladney. I was told he did great work, he was honest, local and fair. I called him for an estimate and to come take a look at the house I loved so much. He admired the little farmhouse I had and acknowledged the amount of work still left to be done on it. He was happy to take on that challenge and told me he would love to come work for me. I feel like I have this old farmhouse to thank for my amazing contractor.
